USS Monitor Version 2.0! I have redesigned this model from square 1.
This 1/72 scale model is based on the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor. It is based on plans from the National Archives, and photos/plans available on the Newport News Mariner Museum’s website. I have incorporated some of the details I’ve seen in various sketches/models online as well, and this is MY interpretation of how I feel the overall cheesebox on a raft looks. It also includes customizable options that can be seen in the preview pictures: - Pilothouse “skirt” (can be built with or without) - Dahlgren turret plug (to have one porthole closed while the other Dahlgren is out) - Removable air vents and smoke stacks (to run either rigged or stowed) - Turret canopy (I plan to make mine removable as well) - Lifeboats (that can be placed as desired by the modeler)
I moved the size up to 1/72 scale, as the last model I made had some tight working spaces for running gear at 1/96. I also changed the style of how the main deck meets with the hull, with more surface area to (hopefully) keep water out more efficiently. I've included a stand for it as well.
At 1/72 scale this model is about 738mm long, 184mm wide, 89mm tall, with 28 files + instructions. (Some files are printed in duplicate.) As always, let me know if you find anything that can be improved and I'll get the updates out
