what I dont like about cgtrader and what can be REALLY improved

Discussion started by mykola1985

Hi there,

First of all I like this web-site and it's definitely a good place to buy and sell 3d models seriously!

What i don't just get (or really dislike) is the fact that when i do a search typing simply ''robot'', I obviously get lots of robots but

many of them are really ''basic'' quality and they are on the first pages of the result while on the very last pages i can find truly amazing robots (really very well done) and i can also find lot of things that have nothing to do with robots!!!!!! (4ex. furniture, cars, plants etc... that don't even have a tag ''robot or anything similar) whyy?? It's very strange don't you think so??

Please do a search for ''robot'' and look at the last pages! you will find amazing robots and things that have nothing to do with them...

I think this is a very weak point of this site and can definitely be improved/fixed

Did the test and get lots of amazing robots on first 5 pages and then it gradually start to degrade, most people do not go past page 6 so to me things look normal, past page 10 indeed I can also see strange stuff but it consistently looks like robotic things.

You seem to be getting completely different result as I’m getting.

I don't say the robots on the first pages are bad , however You can still find very bad robots on first pages and very good on last pages! Why i see furniture and plants in last pages and You don't is definitely a mistery to me...

What about reputation? Does It help to improve position ?

I have no means to measure that, my feeling is sales is biggest impacting factor for how well your stuff ranks.

I did a following test: created another account with other IP and bought One of my models giving It also a positive review. It didn't change the position in search pages. I Just did a small test, Hope its not a crime bere!

That’s strange, when I upload new stuff I usually see it move a bit when it starts piking up views, but then it gets sold and it suddenly moves mush faster (something like 2 pages). I also notice sometimes a backward trend when some item doe not get sales for longer period, probably others then get some more sales and then my stuff moves back in favor for them.

So it seems to me like some sort of constant battle is going on and items need a certain frequency of sales depending on how mush competition it has (in order to stay in place).

I do not know in detail what is exact driving factors but it probably is combination of views, positive feedback from clients, reputation score, etc.

This page is hinting at the driving factors (https://www.cgtrader.com/reputation)

So it seems everything counts to get you a global rank as a designer. Probably a series of computer algorithms is calculating all these factors and give designers a score that influences his position. The goal of those algorithms is most likely to predict best candidates that potentially drive sales.

Ps: how mush did you pay for your model?

I assume if its a small amount it has small effect, for example someone that sells one model for 100 dollars that will have more effect then someone selling a model 6 times for 10 dollars.

Some people use strange strategies to try get in good position, for example some just upload lots of models (pointless models) because uploading models get you 20 points per model. In the end they cannot compete against anyone because they get no views or sales and end up in the back and trow away own time.

Just put lots of efforts in everything and keep looking for best solutions to problems and cut no corners, I believe its best thing to do and that it all contributes to growing and brighter future.

Take time to drive traffic and get lots of views to your pages, respond almost immediately to all messages and have no limits in how far you need to go to get clients 100% satisfied and consistently get positive feedback from them.

Just do everything right and everything is going to be fine, cutting corners is going to make one sad because its just lost time and missed opportunity for growing.
