One month restriction for posting in the forum for new accounts?

Discussion started by trimitek

I think putting such restriction has a good chance to discourage the constant spam in this forum.

Sending personal messages can also be included (replying should be ok).

Those of you who are here for long time probably get used to that, but this really hurts the image of a company.

Deleting them a day or two after they appear is not good enough.

I had never seen such in other forums for a very long time, so not sure why they can't be handled here.

Hi, all my models only for 50%

I'm not sure why you had decided that spamming all over the forum threads is a good idea. Your chances of getting a ban are much higher than getting a sale.

At least we all agree that something should be done about this.
There are most likely some already developed automated ways to deal with such kind of spam.
Probably some CGT staff can join the discussion?

I think there should be some trusted user(s) (administrator(s)) who would be allowed delete all SPAM topics immediately and easily without waitiing for other users votes (especially in weekends).
And in the morning every working day CGT staff could check the deleted threads so the administrator would be under control.

I agree with LemonadeCG. Reporting a post in the forum will not change the current situation much and most likely will make it more complicated.
I don't think limiting mass messaging will hurt any normal person in any way and the forum will still feel open and free. A report button under every post will raise more uncomfortable feelings imho.

Maybe a simple “report this” button can help getting most of the bad stuff out, but I hope it would not burden community members to much with the task keeping the forum clean? Anyways, the “report this” button could have some policy to it like for example, when pressed by at least 5 (different trusted) community members (one gets trusted member after sufficient forum activity and positive feedback from community), message gets deleted automatically from public view and send to suspicious box for staff reviewing. When pressed less then 5 times, gets send to suspicious box, not jet delete from forum until reviewed. When the forum entry has some reply’s, it would need more negative reports, etc.

For messaging, when 5 negative hits from different sellers on one particular user (say in period of one or two day’s), account gets automatically flagged as spam, etc.

I agree with what most people are saying here and share the sad feelings of seeing the forum and messaging system get abused like this, but not in favor of restrictions to enter a posting. The forum is preferably open, clean, inviting and centered around the profession (without getting overtaken by criminal activity). There is a strong community here of active members that can be trusted and it would be wise to use that somehow (but not totally rely on it).

The idea is to remove spam from forum altogether. With your suggestion, users would have to visit tens of shit topics everyday just to press "report" button. Why anyone would ever want this? It's cgtrader's job to keep the forum and all the site clean, they should do this quietly behind the scene and not wait till users start to complain.

Personally would not have a problem with hitting a report button now and then, no idea what someone ells thinks about it? Anyways, if 20 of the most active members have no problem with it then there does not need to be that much clicking all together, probably things would just be clean fast? If it all depends on one person then I agree its a bad solution, however, using the sorting out capabilities of the crowd has proven its worth many times. Look for example at Wikipedia and how that came to being and how it is maintained. There’s just more people that want to keep things clean then people that want to make a mess.

2. I meant one forum THREAD/TOPIC not a post

1. Keyword filter
2. Limit users to 1 forum post per something like 6 hours

These two can be done in few hours of work.

3. First forum thread of a new user needs to be approved by Admin

This depends on the forum system used, but still doable in one afternoon.

Not solving these simple things , bugs and etc. has a strong vibe of CGT being understaffed at least in the devs section.
I even remember times when CGT staff had time to participate in the forums instead of posting template message about emailing to support.

True.
This affects customers as well.
Everyone who sees these illegal offers in the forum will think twice before buying or even entering his payment info in such site.

This is very serious. There is more and more spam and all of it is related to very serious criminal and fraudulent activities. Scam attempts and purchases with cloned and stolen cards have also increased. Probably all of this is related. Also with stolen models.

I believe that allowing all these "more than doubtful" models to be resold and poor control is what has attracted this visible avalanche of scammers and perhaps others not so visible.

Today there are technological media and police units specialized in cybercrime, which could help. I would like to think that something else is being done than delete spam messages and reverse fraudulent transactions.

Yes, that is exactly what i mean - new user's posts should be invisible until moderator approves or deletes them. And you're right, it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes per day for one person to review pending posts, except that we already had moderated job invitations and CGT stuff were so bad at moderating them, that new postings would appear several days, sometimes even weeks after original posting date and everybody hated that. That's why i suggested to ask for volunteers to moderate the forum. Such system works well on other forums and i don't see the reasons why it shouldn't work here as well.

I fully agree that measures against spam and scam should bee taken by cgtrader (they should've been taken long time ago), but probably not the ones you proposed. Denying access to communication for a month for all new users, would be unnecessary and way too harsh punishment for genuine users and could scare away many potential buyers. Instead, i think, it would be better to introduce moderation for new users' forum posts. Once the user prooves to be normal person, his account would be elevated to full access and spammers would be deleted without ever granted chance to post publicly. As for personal messages, i think introducing a limit of 10 messages per day for normal user and 1 message for new user, would effectivelly end mass scamming/spamming through personal messages. I also think, that cgtrader should seek help from active trusted members of community to provide help in moderation, because we all know from previous experience, how ineffective CGT stuff are at that. In any case, something must be done for sure, because current situation is unacceptable - public forum of reputable company looks like garbage dump and even private space of every user is littered with scam. Shame on you cgtrader for accepting such situation and not doing anything to protect safety and privacy of your users.

If by moderation you mean, that the post will not be visible publicly until approved by admin - I agree that this will be a better solution if CGT has the manpower to do it ... I presume that will not take more than a few minutes a day, so I don't think this may be a problem. Limit for PM's is also a good idea.
