New preview picture size

Discussion started by blobfortress

So I came here today and noticed that the page has been changed and the product page displays bigger preview pictures now, which basically means all of mine look quite bad at the moment. The FAQ still says "Please upload only .jpg or .png image formats with resolution of up to 625x625 pixels." What's the new intended size for preview pictures?

Hi Blobfortress,

Yeah, the FAQ updates are in progress, I guess I'll have to push it ASAP - thanks for kicking my bottocks a little bit.

Yes, the product page is now responsive to bigger screens - so the bigger resolution images you have uploaded - the better.

Regards,
Eddie, CGTrader

Thank you. I figured it's responsive now and should be as big as possible - but should it still be square (though I never thought it looked right in square resolution) or more like 16:9?

Eduardas, do you know what is optimal preview image resolution for best experience with 4K display? I think it's inevitable that 4K monitors will became mainstream sooner rather than later and it's better to start preparing for it now. At the moment i'm rendering 1333x1000 and for 1080p it's more than enough, but i fear that it may be insufficient for 4K.

Hi Lemonade,

We'd suggest rendering in 1920x1080 - that would definitely provide a good experience. In my opinion, I think there's still some time to go before 4K screens become mainstream, :)

If you do want to render in 4K resolution (and have the time for it), then it wouldn't hurt, as it will allow customers to zoom in on every detail.

That's interesting. Aspect ratio of preview images on CGT varies somwhere between 1.3 - 1.35 and i choose 1.33 as a middle ground, but your suggested resolution has 1.78 aspect ratio. That would cause some serious cropping should i adopt this format. I'd like that my renders would look as close as possible to the way i frame them.

Should i take your suggestion as a hint that preview images aspect ratio might change in near feature?

I had a test version uploaded in site just now - this is an image of 1920x1080. Try it out on small and wider screen to see how it looks. https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/scanned/various/testtest-c9901e4d-54f2-40ec-8123-b88ad79125f4

Hmm, your link is not working. It brings me to the search with meaningless keywords.

Ok, the link is working now, but preview image has issues like i thought it would. In product window it has a lot of space wasted and in profile view it is heavily cropped. Doesn't look good to me. I'll stick to 1.33 aspect ratio for now, which is working pretty well, i just may increase overall resolution. BTW, i'm selling models at 3 different stock markets and all of them has some inconsistencies in preview image aspect ratios. Yours being the smallest.

Yup, you're very right about that, my recommendation is not the most accurate here - and the 1.33 aspect ratio works better than what I recommended. :) Increasing resolution a bit didn't hurt anyone, ever, I guess. :)
