keep working
Hey all at CGTrader,
Just want to find out peoples thoughts on a problem i've encountered.
A few months ago I put out an advert for a private project, and after considering a fair few offers (some of which were lower than I agreed to spend), I found someone who ticked all my boxes (or so I thought). They already had 3D files of the very thing I wanted, and said all they had to do was adapt them and slice into partssuitable to print.
The project was for something big that could support remote control usage, and to be cut into segments able to be able to print on a hobby 3D printer. I accepted their offer (more than I wanted to spend but was happy for the expertise). I even stipulated that they could sell the design themselves too, and that I could sell the printed model if I wanted to.
The project was completed fast, within 6 weeks, but when I started printing things out it was apparent it wasnt suitable to handle RC use. I went back to the designer and told them, and they adapted it, but not quite to the specification. Then came complaints that they had done all the work and I hadnt accepted it, meaning they couldn't recieve the money. I also left a 5* review for the work.
Being my first time doing this, I apologised as I had no idea CGTrader worked like this, and accepted the work already done so that the Gentleman could recieve his money, on the condition that if anything else needed to be changed, it could be.
Fast forward a few months, and I find something isn't right with the design and request he changes it (as we agreed). He wants to charge me for the new part, and asks why I cry so much about the designs, when he compares how much I paid to the amount of work he feels he's done, comparing the work he's done (presitigous 3D design) to his wifes work (2D).
He then goes on to say this - "You know what my mistake is - freelancers have a rule: not to work with Indians and Russians .... in Europe with the Turks, British and Irish".
I wasn't sure how much I should be paying for the model, but surely he shouldnt have accepted the work if he knew what the cost-vs-work would of been?
I've now been left with a project that's incomplete even though i've accepted it, out of pocket, and future plans ruined by not having a working RC model. And I'm still annoyed at the veiled racism in his message to me about Brits and Irish.
I know i probably dont have a leg to stand on if i want to complain as i've accepted it and its probably in the Terms and Conditions, just want to know what others think.
Was I wrong to send him the money, trusting that he would complete the project to the specifications I advertised?
Have a good rest of the week all.

I think the key phrase is "The project was for something big that could support remote control usage".
To me the above statement is vague and that is what probably is the root of the problem. When you ask someone to design something, you have to give clear instructions on what you want, as in thicknesses of parts, orientation of printing and so forth. Did you specify that this model that you wanted was supposed to survive crashes and rollovers? Because "remote control usage" doesn't necessarily convey that idea. 3D design and 3D printing are vastly different. Just because someone can design a model, it doesn't mean that model can be 3d printed. In addition, did you specify what material you were using to print and the method of printing? Did the artist you chose, have experience in 3D printing?
I'm not sure if you want to share personal information, such as how much you paid and what you received for your money, but not being extremely clear when you make a contract will most likely result in dissatisfaction. You could contact CGTrader and have them review what has happened, but if you weren't clear on what you wanted, and the artist fulfilled your requirements, there may not be anything that could be done.
There are always 3 sides to every story. Your side, their side and the truth. I'm not sure how racism came into the conversation between you and the artist, but, again, we're only hearing one side of the conversation.
Yes, you are wrong.
And, as I see it, you are wrong on few levels.
1. This issue is between you, "hired gun" and CGT. In this case, creating a topic on the forum will not solve your problems. If you needed to blow off some steam, that's ok but you may get some answers that will create some more steam. If the title of this topic was "I was foolish, I screwed up and I need comfort", I'd give you all my understanding and support. Honestly.
2. You marked project "as finished". Why did you do that if you didn't think the project is finished? You didn't "send him the money" but paid him/her/it for finished project. It is absolutely your responsibility for this action. Right or wrong? It's up to you to figure this out.
Don't get me wrong... I have nothing against you (except one thing) but there are some rules here. Many times designers complained here that they weren't paid for projects they've done. Why they weren't paid? Because they didn't follow the rules. Apply > Get hired > Get the project prepaid > Do the job > Get paid. As you are responsible for marking the project "as finished", they (we, the workers) are responsible for doing the job and not being sure if we'll get paid. None of this would happen if we'd follow the rules. Anyways, when some s**t happens, contact support on CGT.
3. What probably bothers me most in this topic... Racism / discrimination. I can't say what shocked me more; his statement (written in bold) or your reaction to be "annoyed" with racism towards British and Irish people. Racism is also wrong towards Indians, Russians, Turks and any other nation, race, gender, alien...
TL;DR: support@cgtrader.com
You should have contacted support, explained your problem and asked for a refund if you are not satisfied with the work. Since you decided to write on the forum about your problem, I suggest you to show us who the artist is and what exactly the problem is. When someone chooses to blame someone on a forum, he/she must provide enough evidence of the problem that supports their story. No offense, but anyone can blame anyone for anything. There are a lot of people here who don't have good intentions, and will try to "destroy" someone out of anger just because their scam didn't work, or something other malicious. Remember, there are plenty of honest people who are good at what they do, and beside hard work, they have to deal with false accusations on a daily basis, some of them make a living by selling here, so its easy to f**u up someones life for no reason. No matter how it sounds, my suggestion to anyone is to first ask on the forum who from trusted artist can provide the best possible solution in the area needed. For example, you got 3dcargo for interiors, TazMan2000 for 3d printing, Forester for plants, CGAmp for flight simulator stuff, 3dmeshes for background props, Luxxeon, LemonadeCG, Trimitek for 3d in general etc. those are some of the people that I personally know will do the job "by the book" and even if they can't help you for whatever reason they will point to a person who can help you.
As far as that racism shit goes, report that to support they really enjoy to deal with that type of people, i guess, people...
