WIldcat LOD question

Discussion started by themisfragg

I completed a Wildcat task for a model at LOD0 and now i have unlocked the child tasks that need me to upload same model for LOD1, LOD2, LOD3, LOD4.

The thing is, my original LOD0 model is only 6K Triangles.

I'm asking because I read on EGG workflow briefing an example that said :
If model is 100K triangles LOD1 should be 50K, LOD2 25K, LOD3 12K and LOD4 5K.

Now, is that only for example purposes or is this the limit of triangles in each model ?

Should I leave my model as it is and only decimate it for LOD4 to make it under 5K triangles ?

Something similar has happened to me, they ask me to reduce the triangle count in the base model, and when passing the low poly models, there is no way to reduce it without destroying the model and the worst thing is that they want the uvs to be kept intact in each level.

Yes exactly same problem. Model is too low on triangles and if i try to decimate it, even manualy it just gets destroyed.

Well, I'm guessing next time try to make it higher poly than needed (but still less than maximum allowed) just to have enough room to work with for LODs. The worst part is the LOD3 and LOD4, which they're asking us to pretty much do manually as these 2 lowest LODs are actually LOD0 and LOD1 for VR, means they will be meant to be seen from up close, and for a lot of meshes it's just impossible, especially for complex meshes, LOD3 and 4 get super boxy and messy if they have lots of curves. The price also doesn't make sense, if you're supposed to do this part manually, bringing a 100k tris mesh to 12.5k tris and then to 5k tris, while keeping the same UV islands and the same mesh shapes (since it's like LOD0 for VR, but only 5% of the initial polycount), it's a whole new job, you're pretty much doing a big retopology task, manually, and 7$ is just not worth that trouble, not even close.

Exactly, however they ask you to optimize the mesh to reduce the count in the Lod0, even though the allowed limit is higher. also they do not provide information on what is required, which makes you have to correct again and again and then they mark you as failed. And consequently they lower points (and obviously the price they pay you for the model) which ends up making you no longer want to take on any project. In addition to supervisors, they almost never read or respond to the chat. A whole paradise.

Well... true. Projects that require the EGG workflow seem to have so many rules, some more strict than others. That could be the reason I keep seeing the same tasks coming back a couple weeks later after they've been taken. I personally was avoiding them, but they're almost the only kind of tasks I'm seeing so I gave them a chance. Sure they're annoying, but I think that with time you can probably find them easier as you memorize the workflow and don't need to keep going back and correcting things. The part that's confusing me right now is the LODs, if the first 3 LODs (0,1,2) are accepted and tagged as finished, what happens if you decide to not do the other LODs?

It's simple, it's considered unfinished, and I'm afraid you won't get paid.

Yes I failed LOD4 and got nothing! Such a waste of my time..

Wait, you don't even get paid for the LODs you actually finished if the other LODs are not finished?

It's depend on QA. I have multiple QA's that really cooperate with my tasks and act like a human. I booked their names. Also QA that really strict with illogical comments I booked their name. So the next task if my 1st round is being comment by these bad QA's, I asked them to fail immediately.

Lod1,2,3 and 4 not really hard if you know what you're doing. Just dissolve loops step by step, once you reached 50%, then save it as LOD1, dissolve again and reached 25%, save for LOD2 and so on.. (Make sure you don't dissolve edge from UV borders). No need to use addon or anything. just do it by hand from LOD1.. you will finished them all within 30 mins.

Well, fun fact, I wasn't paid for any of the work I did, even if the first 3 tasks were tagged as FINISHED and accepted by QA, I chose not to do LOD3 and LOD4, and I ended up giving them free finished LODs 0 1 2... I should have known better... felt like I got scammed.

I have completed many SM tasks. They're not scam just too strict compared to the price given.
