Need accurate schematics of Gamecube console shell for CNC aluminum body.

Discussion started by xandermish

I have an idea for a gift that involves replacing the gamecube consoles exterior plastic shell with an aluminum body. I know someone with the equipment, but cannot find any resources online for accurate dimensions or schematics. I will also need an additional hdmi port and provisions for rocker switches.

The interior can be simplified since the headers for the main board will probably need to be plastic (and thus 3d printed) and a CNC machine might have trouble milling out such geometry. It's the exterior that needs to be very accurate to the consoles original (and beautiful) look.

I have not undertaken a project of this kind so input on design decisions and potential oversights are always welcome. As I have previously stated, I cannot find any accurate recreations of the GC console shell online and so to have something like this online for people to use might very useful in general.

If you are interested but need funding for the work, I am open to paying for your services. That said I can't give you much upfront.

Can you not laser scan the original case for the dimensions? Why make it in aluminium? There are reasons why the Game cube has been (blow) moulded (apart from the expense), machining something like this would be a royal pain in the gluteus maximus mate. If you really are stuck on making it from aluminium then I would suggest 3D printing a dissolvable mould and then casting it rather than machining it. If you use a grade such as LM6 (BS1490) then you shouldn't have any problems. I would strongly advise against using a CNC for this project!
