My thanks to CGTrader

Discussion started by LemonadeCG

I just wanted to express my gratitude to cgtrader for showing courage and taking mean actions against thieves, who were stealing from artists their models and were selling them for profit. Making 3D models is hard and often non-profitable business and to see how low-morale people are profiting from our hard work, is heart breaking. Every banned thief from cgtrader, is small victory for honest artists. Thank you brave people from cgtrader for taking hard decisions. Once again you prooved that you are the best marketplace for the artists.

I join the above.
My respect to CGTrader staff and to all that help to clean up the market from thieves.
If there were more people like this, the world would have been a better place.

CGT is being active in the fight against fraud and it is welcome, but it is also worrying that the number of cheaters is so high, (more than in other markets). It seems as if thieves think this is a good site for their illegal activities. CGT's attitude seems smart and right to me, I hope they will be able to put an end to fraud and thieves disappear. That will enhance your reputation and attract quality buyers, which is what we all want.

I think it is a matter of time, (a short time), that in 3d markets they begin to respect copyright and those who infringe them will not have a place in them. In other artistic facets (painters, photographers, musicians, artists ...) much more respect is shown and violations are managed much better. They all have professional collective management associations and I think that's the key. I believe that the imminent change will be driven by the modelers, led by the most affected, already fed up with this situation. CGT and other markets resolve infringement claims, in accordance with the law and internal regulations. But if there are more expulsions it is because there have been more complaints, which shows that something is changing and not only in CGT.

I wonder if they are the same fish that have been plaguing 3dsmax with virus scripts. I have a feeling. Seems like an influx of scammers happened here around the same time that Autodesk reported on some of their Max files being corrupted with malicious scripts by, and I quote, "a mercenary hacker group targeting 3dsmax". That's what was reported on ZDNet two days ago.

@luxxeon WOW! It's something new and interesting!!!... I need to dig 3d-industry news deeper. But I meant simplier things, mostly from jewelry segment (there is few "tycoons" e.g. cadcart and similar that still getting big profit via CGT)

There is also one "big fish" , on wich profile I have found couple of stolen models (enough for a ban) , stolen from one of the designers here on cgt and heavily modified. I was able to proove that those are stolen models, so support removed those but they wont remove "big fish". Thats the reality of cgt.

@luxeon, it's been clear to me for a long time that everything is related. It is well known that pirated download pages are breeding grounds for malware. It is also evident that 3d markets and especially CGT, are flooded with models coming from these pages and that many modelers use pirated copies of software (coming in many cases from the same pages), to make their original models. They are the first infected, but they are all contributing, probably unknowingly, to its spread. It is an effective way to spread malware, because pirate pages have thousands of visits and not only will the person who downloads files from those pages be infected, but also each and every one of those who buy those models, (or simply open the files to review them , such as CGT).

But I do not think that Autodesk is the objective, it is only the means used (because it is the most widely used), to obtain sensitive data such as credit card numbers and other documents, which are then resold (many times in this same forum) and with those who later make fraudulent purchases (in which the seller ends up losing the model and the money), or phantom sales, (the latter related to other illegal activities such as money laundering or drug sales).

If CGT really wants to crack down on fraud, it cannot ignore that generated by pirated software and should join forces with Autodesk to end it. That, in addition to being the right thing to do, would be a real show of courage, because we all know that it would kill a large part of your business. I also believe that the best thanks are actions, not words, and that sellers could support those who support us, selling our models, exclusively in markets that respect copyright. It is not coherent to support those who do not respect us.

@skapricorn, I agree that counterfeits and illegal copies of jewelry are another important part of the illegal activities that take place here, due to the large number of models involved and therefore the percentage and volume of sales they generate. This does not happen at this level in any other market. They violate copyright law among other laws, attract undesirable customers (counterfeiters, scammers ...), and therefore increase CGT's bad reputation. They should not be allowed, but CGT is tolerant in this regard, even saying "you can sell whatever you want, until we receive a copyright claim."

Again, if CGT is determined to crack down on fraud, it should eliminate all those models, and with them much of its profit, which would also be a brave decision. It remains to be seen if CGT does the right thing, but I don't think they will do it without a push from those affected.

In short, there is still a lot to do if fraud is to be stopped. CGT will be able to demonstrate, if it really supports and respects the modelers or we are just the merchandise with which it does business. Removing a few cheats and then letting them back in isn't much. It is only a small crab step as the end result is that the thieves are still here. It is quite common lately and very embarrassing, to see how cheats are exposed, trying to deny the obvious and how CGT wastes time with them. Which leads me to wonder, when will the famous application that CGT works on be finished, because it is sorely needed.

I hope that CGT will have courage and continue to the end on the path that it has undertaken, addressing the issue of fraud and piracy globally. This would certainly enhance CGT's reputation and make it the best 3d market by far. It would also force the rest of the markets to follow in its footsteps and comply with the rules, or to stay out of the game, becoming confused with pirated pages.

The truth is that it has been a very pleasant surprise to see how anti-fraud measures are taken from CGT, in general it has always seemed to me an honest platform and concerned about designers, but, I think that here they have taken a very brave step that, without a doubt, increases the level and category of the site

Even if you dont upload stolen models, they will stolen your freelance work also! did you read the terms of the site?

"3.6. CGTrader may terminate or deactivate the membership of any person or entity for any reason at any time without notice."

There is nothing more to say, the terms are true, they infact do terminate your account (when you have enough pending money for it)

Man, on long term relations they will earn more on 30-20% commission they take. Do you really think banning users (that potentially can upload more and more successful models over time) to get one-time payment is more profitable? It's like killing chicken that laying golden eggs. Maybe not always golden but at least eggs.

Yeah but there is no "long-term" for them anyomre, they are just getting off of business. Yeah of course it is a good question, the terms say "we can stole your money without notice and by anyreason we want" with no advice. Am i lying?

Just read the forums, more people are complaining about that they are just deleting the accounts before paying that is a common strategy before declaring into bankrupt.

If you search the designers, you can search by their Location. There are artists selling here from all over the world, not just those locations. Many of us from areas in South America, US, Canada, Asia, and Africa. There are artists here from Nigeria, UK, Russia, etc. I don't see the connection.

In a few weeks you will see how cgtrader stops paying to his workers too and in a year or so the website will magically expire, thay are running out of business and taking away all they can before going to miami.
