Free non-commercial and commercial license, Make sense?

Discussion started by frederico4d

Hi guys, this is a bit of a mess in my mind so I would like to know what people here think, if it makes sense and is something reasonable etc... so please give me your thoughts, but first I have to explain my point of view!

I started to make some models for 3D printing for free, and posted them on other sites that usually have free downloads are are more 3d printing oriented, with a non-comercial license, so anyone can print it at home, I want to keep it that way, and I do know that there is not much I can do to enforce someone to not use it commercially. (I dont have means to get laywers and that is not what I want anyway)

So, the models are available under that license but I would like to also make them available somehow for commercial use, which would make sense here on cgtrader. for really cheap, just so if someone wants to be fair and give me a dolla for my work, and use it commercially in good willl, he can too.

So, would it make sense to have the model available mostly with a free noncomercial license and then here on cgtraders witha a really cheap value and that explained transparently, here in cgtraders too so people would only pay if they actually want?
Or am I being wierd?

Thank you!

How about having two listings, one with Editorial License and the other with a Commercial License so buyers can try it out with one then buy with the other. Just an idea. Peace.

Yes That is the Idea! thanks, glad it made sense for you! I', just doing that on different sites, since I started posting noncomercial versions on other sites, but I could also have both here as you mentioned!

Few days late to this post but , Whoever is getting your models for free, or with a non Commercial license for free or cheaper price is NOT going to worry about copyright and not using it commercially..........I would recommend just having 1 set, commercially available for a price. not Free, otherwise you will only get people using it for free and have no way of controlling it.

Actually if you want to sell here on CGTrader please, don't make it too cheap, that's what is killing the market.

I understand what you mean, and I do try to not put a too cheap of a price on my models in general, but for this particular project, when the models are already available, and they are not very practical (just statues with not much possibility of changing posture etc) I think it wouldn't be too unfair.

Oh it's okay I mean if you're models don't worth like 50$ so don't put them at 50$ but if your model really worth 50$ dont put it at 10$ ya see ? :)

I would suggest to stop releasing the models for free.
If you consider that your models are good enough for someone to use them commercially and profit from your work, then you should definitely stop giving them away and you should start selling them.
Also if you want to sell them for commercial use, they should NOT be cheap! it is the other way around, they should be expensive, because the buyer is going to profit from your work, and you will not receive any royalties from that, so you should secure as much money upfront as you can.

Damn, I understand that, but it is not the answer I'm looking for haha! I guess cgtrader is much more commercially oriented, and I'm trying to find a midway point. I do want to have the models available for free anyway (not all my models, just this specifically themed ones) but with a noncomercial license like many 3d printing sites do. From the reactions I see that is weird, and probably not a good idea :(
