Clothing from Marvelous Designer

Discussion started by am15

Hello!

I have a collection of clothing made in Marvelous Designer, which looks cool inside MD and is well made, but when exported as OBJ looks like a mess.

How do I prepare clothing for sale on CGTrader? Just a default MD file, or you have to resculpt it to look good? I never sold clothing before, help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I'm still using MD5. I'm not sure about the newer version. MD writes custom vertex normals in obj. From my experience, which sometimes causes a mess. It depends on the software you use to open the obj file. I usually re-topo the mesh from MD and bake high-poly to low-poly since I want to rig and weight-paint the clothing with my character then include the original MD files with arrangement point files as placeholders for customers who want to keep on working in MD. From my research on CGT, most sellers seem to offer MD format and at least obj.

Make sure that you are exporting the clothing in quad format, if you are not already doing so. The default triangle export makes a very crude *.obj.

Also, resulpting is not a good idea until the *.obj clothing has been smoothed - or sub-divided.

You can make renders of the smoothed *.obj files for your products, just a s long as you state that the *.obj has been smoothed in your product description. Also, you should advise customers to "smooth" the *.obj(s) in thier own application.
