I recently posted a freelance project on CGTrader to have a MAN TGX 3D-printable model created.
I received a surprisingly large number of applications, but I'm having a hard time determining who is actually experienced and who isn't.
Some applicants have no references or previous work on their CGTrader profile, while others send images of MAN trucks as examples of their work. In some cases, I have found very similar or identical MAN models/images already available on CGTrader, which makes me wonder whether these are actually their own works.
For experienced CGTrader users:
- How do you verify that a freelancer actually created the models shown in their portfolio?
- Are there specific red flags you look for?
- Is it reasonable to ask for a wireframe, work-in-progress screenshots, or a short screen recording showing the model being created?
- Can CGTrader verify whether a portfolio image/model actually belongs to the applicant?
- What is the safest way to structure the project so that I don't pay for work that isn't delivered or isn't original?
I'm not accusing anyone in particular. I simply want to make sure I select a genuine and experienced 3D artist, especially because this project requires accurate modeling and the final model needs to be suitable for 3D printing.
Any advice from people who have hired freelancers through CGTrader would be greatly appreciated.
Go to freelancer's profile, scroll down, under "Reviews" see if freelancer already made some 3D projects and check the ratings of projects.
I guess this is the best way to see if freelancer has experience in 3D Projects and what quality you can expect. You can also see what kind of 3D Projects someone usually do.
Main red flag is when models in portfolio have different quality an different rendering style.
Most legit sellers with some experience have some kind of style and rendering pipeline. They can sell older models of lower quality tho.
Legit experienced sellers also have proper technical description of their models without BS.
If the models does not showcase wireframes that's definitely red flag.
CGT does not check anything and yes there is a lot of stolen stuff so being careful is a must. Use intuition and common sense.
