3D model descriptionSMS Sachsen was the lead ship of the Imperial German Navy's first class of purpose-built steam-only capital ships, laid down at the AG Vulcan shipyard in Stettin in 1875 and commissioned in 1878. A central citadel ironclad designed for Baltic Sea coastal defense, she carried six powerful 26cm barbette guns and a heavily layered armor belt, and was built to sortie from fortified bases to break enemy blockades — a direct response to the French naval blockade Germany had suffered during the Franco-Prussian War. Her most enduring historical legacy, however, extends far beyond German waters. The same AG Vulcan shipyard that built Sachsen was subsequently contracted by the Chinese Beiyang Fleet to construct the battleships Dingyuan and Zhenyuan, directly based on the Sachsen class design — ships that would go on to fight at the Battle of the Yellow Sea in 1894 and shape the entire course of East Asian naval history. Our 1:96 scale 3D printable model captures Sachsen in her original pre-reconstruction configuration, with the distinctive four funnels, open bow barbette, and the characterful low-freeboard silhouette that defined the class before the late 1890s overhaul transformed her appearance. 3D printing settingsThis model has been designed from the ground up for accessibility, printability, and full RC operation. The core hull and superstructure consist of just 33 parts, all sliced to fit standard 22×22 cm print beds — making the main build clean, manageable, and straightforward even for builders new to large scale ship models. For those who want to push the build further, the complete package includes over 140 parts in total, with a comprehensive optional accessories library covering various deck guns, navigation lights, deck rails, fenders, and a selection of both steam-powered and row-powered dinghies in multiple configurations. The finished model is fully RC-ready with everything needed built directly into the design — dedicated motor mounts, a servo frame, articulated rudder, and multiple interior access hatches positioned throughout the hull for convenient reach to electronics during building and on-water operation. The interior volume at 1:96 scale is generous, with ample room to house batteries, ESCs, receiver, and servos without compromise. Hull sections feature precision alignment details at every joint for accurate, clean assembly, and two dedicated clip types are included to hold pieces securely while adhesive sets. Underwater and topside parts are separated throughout, allowing builders to print in different filament colors for an instant two-tone finish without painting. A full color 3MF file is also included for color-capable printer owners. We recommend 0.15mm layer height for hull surfaces and superstructure panels to bring out the rivet lines, armor plate details, and period surface character that make this model such a rewarding build from first print to finished ship.
