Are people boycotting Cgtrader?

Discussion started by holy360

Hello, I've been on Cgtrader since 2020 and see constant increase in sales, but since July sales have declined but I'm seeing a huge increase on other sites like renderhub and turbosquid, does this mean people are boycotting Cgtrader because of their recent changes in policies?

Hi, and can you justify from what parameters you conclude that you are seeing huge increase on *turbosquid?! ...

I've seen a decrease since June on ALL sites. Had my worst month in the last 8 to 10 years in July both here and everywhere else too. This month is starting out slow as well.

This is pretty much my experience as well. Cgtrader has been affected the least, other marketplaces feel like they're in their death beds already.

cults - increase sales, renderhub - no changes, crealitycloud - slight decrease, cgtrader - died (two sales in 2 months).

Summer is pretty low every where.

While we may want to believe that a couple of dozen disgruntled forum users like us have made any difference, I have to say that I don't think it matters to CGT one jot, nor have a few bad reviews made any difference. Like Tashi says, sales are usually low this time of year. You will see a peak in September.

Who can rank model selling sites in terms of sales quality?

Sales have nosedived for me since the updates they made to the site in June, a fraction of sales compared to same period last year despite having many more models online.

I have a similar situation, the first months of the year were normal, but recently I noticed a big drop, I’m almost sure it started after the new changes and the introduction of the credit system,
for me it seems like my models have less visibility now, I used all the credits from CGTrader to boost many models but none of them got any sale, maybe Cgtrader algorithms assume that if boosted models don’t sell both these models and the creator’s other models should be ranked lower, it was probably better to not use this new credit system or at least wait until it’s no more in Beta version

To be honest, my sales seem the same as normal. I have noticed that I am now getting less money for each sale, and it is now impossible to ever get back to my previous amount (almost 78%) I'd have to sell something like 3x the amount I did before.

I'm migrating to Fab and Artstation and just publish here as an afterthought for the most part.
They sold out their publishing community and used our content to create a really low quality ai Image generator in the form of CGDream which is just not a usable production tool and then decided to sell our content in bulk to companies training their own ai models, this will show up as CGI clients in your sales reports.
My studio has stopped purchasing here as many of our artists publish here in their spare time so they have shot themselves in the foot a little by not realizing many of the buyers are also sellers and no doubt this is happening elsewhere in the community.

the commission rate and especially the model behind it is pretty bad for beginners. The content of copycats, gamerips and super bad 3d models here is the biggest I've ever seen in a shop. The website itself is on a lowest regarding presentation, layout, don't want to mention the technical side of it. This is the worst shop that has ever evolved. I understand, that professional veterans here can make an income, but still you are in the worst shop from all of them. And 40% commission until you make not more sales over time, in a with crap flooded site is simply just suicide. I am only on fab and that has many reasons! And to add my feeling for an answer to your question: CGtrader is boycotting itself for all the reasons I mentioned above. My opinion, but yes, expecting sales in summer, were the world is collapsing regarding economically and by the climate problems we have, is a little blind.

Sorry for my bad english.

Definitely the worst month since I started selling 3D models on CGTrader.

I raised the price of my models by 15% to compensate for CGTrader lowering the seller payout rate, as well as the significant drop in the value of the USD over the past eight months . That surely has an effect, but I didn't expect such a steep drop.

I don't think that price increase had big impact on the sales, i didn't touch my prices at all and yet my sales plummeted over the last few months. TBH sales on other marketplaces are very bad as well. I'm not sure if it's summer, or generative AI, or something else to blame, but it's increasingly apparent that times when you could rely on income from model sales are largely over.

I agree with my colleague LemonadeCG. I haven't altered my prices for the last 3 months, and I've had sales fall to the lowest in the history of my CGTrader statistics. I've been trying to allow the site to fix itself before I upload the bulk of my new models, but I've also seen a drop on other sites which seems to indicate something across the board is going on, not just here. Since most of my models are for 3d printing, I'm starting to speculate that Generative AI is at the core of the drop for my models. The reason being, topology isn't as important for 3d printing as it would be for other 3d categories. The topology result of most AI models that I've seen creates terrible triangulated meshes that would need professional retopo in order to meet animated production requirements. So I plan to start uploading more of my character models and rigged figures to see if it helps sales by the year's end.

I agree with "Lemonage CG". Here on CGT my sales have been falling for a long time. I haven't changed the price, but I've noticed a drop in sales since July, not only here but also on other sites. I've even reduced the price. I imagine that AI may be to blame for this. There are many models I see being sold that are the result of AI. There's also a political issue for me, as I had a lot of customers in the US directly. I don't know how much this "tax" process is affecting their lives, but I had a conversation with one and he simply told me that he is in a moment of "containment" of spending and "insecurity". I hope we can get back on our feet.
