Site Suggestion: Make the thumbnails 1x1 (square)

Discussion started by MichaelTaylor3D

Mathematically it makes more sense for the preview thumbnails to be square instead of rectangle. This is because a square would allow you to zoom further into an object and have less wasted white space then a rectangle.

Renderings of scenes dont suffer from this as much as individual objects.

If your unwilling to change the aspect ratio, could you at the least consider changing the preview images to "scale and resize" instead of "scale and crop" Almost all my models that were imported from turbosquid were rendered 1x1 aspect ratio, and on this site the preview images are cropped awkwardly, and its way to many models to go and re render each one.

Normal render output is not square 1:1
Most of images/rendered are 4:3 aspect ration, not 1:1 square as you want it to be.
Highly doubt you going to get that feature.

In my case, i try to capture as much of a scene as i can, so wide aspect ration is a benefit to me. Hardly ever i see anybody need to have square image, unless you rendering boxes and weird objects tat fit into a box area.
How about vehicles ? Those all need wide angle view.
How about characters ? those all need narrow view images to show full height of the character.

Totally agree with the OP. The cropped preview images make the site look unprofessional. As a seller CGTrader works great, much better than TS. As a buyer TS looks much more professional.

Yea I agree with 3dartisan, Cgtrader has really gone above and beyond for the seller experience which I think TS is sorely lacking. But I think they need to put more effort into the buyer experience as well. Its usually small little tweaks like the cropping issue that makes all the difference to the buyer.

Hi guys, some very good ideas here :) One of the key things in order to attract buyers is to offer a wide selection of models - no matter how good your buyer experience is, it will be hard to sell if you have 50 models on the marketplace. So we always wanted to make sure that the sellers have a good experience and would be willing to use the site. Over the last 9 months however we've done quite a few improvements in the buyer side of experience as well, and will continue to do much more in the coming months - so that your time here is not only fun, but also profitable :)

Burak, TS has a slight advantage for being in the market for over 10 years :) But we're getting there and we'll get there with your help - stick with us and thanks so much for your support and patience!

Yes I was skeptical at first, but I fully support this site now and really want it to succeed. I really think that you guys are on to something here. I know its a catch22 between the initial sellers and buyers but I think if you continue the amount of innovation that you have shown on this site (whereas others I would argue have lost their innovation). This site could easily become the new standard in the future. Keep up the good work.

You could add crop band to see all the image independently the ratio

Fabelar is on the right track with this idea. Many of us sell on multiple sites - we upload the same images to each. Most sites favor square images, so the majority of images CGT will get will always be square. CGT needs to find a way to use them to their best advantage - ie not crop them.

I too am sold on the concept of CGT over TS.
