Buying model for Educational Purposes

Discussion started by jesseflores25

Hey everyone,

I am an instructor in texture/ look development and I was wondering what is the best way using cgTrader on buying models to teach for a course. I know buying it once and distributing with the class is a big no no so I'm curious if anyone knows what is the best way to purchase 3D models for educational purposes? I suppose reaching directly to the artist about a model would be a first step. Thank you in advance.

Are you asking about if there are educational discounts on purchased models? You can make an offer on any model with a price you feel is fair, and also leave a note as to why you're making that bid. I suppose that's one way to go about it.

The legal way to do this (without bothering the author) will be to buy the model multiple times (once for every student you plan to provide the model to) and explain to every one of them what they can, and can not do with the model they receive, according to the Royalty Free license.
The same applies to individuals who buy a model to include it in a project and are required to provide the scene files - they have to buy another license for their customer (who will have the model).

This was my initial idea, to purchase it multiple times and I was hoping I could be provided with download links for each that I forward to each student. I found an artist I liked and checked in with him and we figured out the best way is to request a custom order (hire them) and this way there won't be any licensing issues.

Nice! It would be great if customers had different options in the site interface to choose from for cases like yours + different licenses and pricing for different uses. I hope we will see that on CGT in the near future.

It's nice to see someone asking this question instead of just sending a bunch of copies to all their students :D

I gave a talk at a school and, I noticed that all the kids had a copy of one of my books on their PC's. When I commented on how nice it was to see, the teacher told me that she had bought it off Amazon and then sent a copy to everyone haha! Having to explain how wrong that was without looking a £$%£$ is very awkward lol

I hear ya! I have lectures online as well and I wouldn't want them distributed like that either. I did reach out to an artist I liked and we are going the custom project route.
