What is a good list of mythical creatures?

Discussion started by AcetheSuperVillain

I'm making a series of anthropomorphic fantasy races, elves, goblins, dragons, unicorns, tengu, kitsune, jackalopes, snallygasters, etc. As I get more and more completed, I want to start putting them into themed collections. I want the first themed collection to be classical mythical creatures, and I'm trying to think of what races should be in this list. I want the Classical Mythology Collection to be the generic mythical creatures that everyone thinks of when they think mythical creature, Dragon, Unicorn, Pheonix, etc. I'd like to know what other people think of the most classical mythical creatures.

So far, here is what I've been thinking of:

Drake

Unicorn

Elf* (not sure if I want humanoids in this collection)

Goblin* (not sure if I want humanoids in this collection)

Devilish* (not sure if I want humanoids; not sure if it exactly fits)

Gryphon

Phoenix

Wyvern* (not sure if it's classic enough)

Hydra

Kraken

Cerberus (planned)

Sea Serpent (planned)

Harpy (planned)

Alraune/Dryad/Trent/Plant-person (planned)

Pegasus/Cholima (planned)

Hippocamp (planned)

Any thoughts about the list, and any obvious critters that I've forgotten would be helpful. Other theme collections I'd like to make in the future are Humanoids (elves, goblins, harpies, etc), Darkside (goblins, devils, orcs, etc) Sea Creatures (kraken, sea serpent, hippocamp, etc) New World (jackalope, snallygaster, anu sinom, quetzalcoatl, etc) African Cryptids (kongamoto, emela-n'touka, etc) Dragonkind (drake, wyvern, longma, hydra, etc) Yokai (kitsune, tengu, nekomata, etc) So if something gets cut from the Classic Mythology Collection, don't worry, it'll probably show up in one of the others.

my two cents,
Maybe you should understand these creatures in context and find out what they mean, maybe you'll discover that it's often the same idea just only in different places or times.
Regarding the invented creatures that have nothing to do with any real mythology, I would avoid them because there is not a real idea behind .

You could also go with Lovecraft pantheon, I think that the Ancients and the rest could be a really interesting sculpting challenge.
Also, maybe you didn't mentioned it on purpose, but the centaurs and minotaurs are pretty classic too (even if they obviously fit more in the Humanoid section).

I wasn't planning to do any specific fictional creations, but I might let Lovecraft slide, since that's pretty old. I've started doing Constructor Kits, maybe there will be a Lovecraft Constructor Kit.

I'm not going to do Centaurs because the Acheron Series models all use the same rig, which is supposed to allow them to swap animations and outfits between all races. I have fun mashing creatures like hydras and phoenixes into a humanoid shape, but I don't think that would work for Centaurs. I've omitted Minotaurs because I think they are boring. Instead of Minotaurs, there will be Ushi-Oni, in either this version or that version: https://www.setouchiexplorer.com/beware-ushi-oni/ or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ushi-oni#/media/File:29.Ushioni.jpg There will also be Baphomets, which I think will look similar, but cooler.
