I was asked to create 6 photorealistic clothes for 75$, here is my answer

Discussion started by yaschan

So I got invited to a project here in CG Trader. A person asked me to create six photorealistic clothes for 75 bucks.
Some of the items are rather complex such as down jacket. So I said I could consider doing one item for 500 dollars which I think is reasonable - let me explain why.

The process I like when creating clothes is to make the clothes first in Marvelous Designer. This takes roughly a single work day if we are looking for photorealism.
Then the models most definitely need detailing in ZBrush. Lets be realistic and count another workday for this.

Then there is a retopology phase which can take variety of time, but lets call it one day including UV unwrapping for quality work.

If for game baking might be required. If not then to the Substance Painter and custom substances in Substance Designer. This can take variety of time, but one day is absolutely minimum, and then there is client feedback and possible changes that can take variety of time.

This is easily five days worth of work. So my proposal was 100 dollars per day. This rate is definitely on the low end for any professional. Just see and research what others are charging.
And yet I am called greedy. Sigh.

I have had very reasonable requests here in CG Trader. But also requests such as this. For the very least I would prefer not to be called names for trying to be reasonable

Edit: Instead of raising unnecessary negativity, I think this topic should be discussed more. 3D Artists need to be able to make a living. 75 dollars for a week worth of work is not a living.
I see CG Trader has responsibility as one of the leading sites to make sure we actually get paid. Unless the purpose is to exploit designers who would otherwise have chance to get a proper wage.

Yes, you did the right thing. People who post low paying jobs will also have low effort results. There should probably be a better pricing system for job posts.

I think you quoted a fair price, especially for professional high-quality results. Clearly, the client was not expecting results from professionals. This is one of the reasons I rarely, rarely accept project requests anymore. I prefer to reserve my time for creating more models for the marketplace.

Thanks guys. What I have heard more than once is the claim ”but you sell similar models here for way less”!
Then also there is aspect, what if they just sell the models somewhere else as their own?

"But you sell similar models here for way less" , I also lost multiple clients because of this, people don't realize that stolen models are cheap and that legit ones are expensive, but after all explanations what model is what and why that models is priced that why and way this is priced this way I gave up. People will always look how to get something cheaper than it is but sometimes that will bring you trouble. You did the good thing and im also thinking that 100$ for day is way less than it should be.

yaschan: if somebody doesn't see difference between stock item (which can be sold multiple times) and custom made model, this is just stupidity or disrespect against you as an hard working artist. You did it well with the long answer. Also when I see many projects with for example 50$ budget and many applicants it is sad how many people here don't value their hard work. :-(

@zaboltama Well said. I didn't get at first what yaschan said, you summed that good. I think the problem is that people know very well the difference (some don't)between stock and custom but want to force you because most of them are thinking that you are strugglling for money (from my expirience at least). Once I was asked does 19$ low poly bus model that im selling have modeled interior, engine, drivetrain, mechanical parts. Yeah all that for 19$....

@PhantomDesign interesting experience, you are right that maybe some people are thinking that you desperately need money and you will do anything for a penny

@zabotlama Honestly I kinda blame/don't blame, but when you see HQ model that is 2-3-4$ what can you think ? First thing that comes to mind is that artist who sell this is desperate to get money, but even if you have "normal" prices there will always be someone who will ask "will you create this for me for reasonable 50$". Maybe if legit artists raise their prices to lets call it "normal" level, maybe situation will change, I don't know.

maybe there should be an option for other artists to suggest what prices on models should be after upload

Good for you! Yes, you did the right thing.

Many, many proposed work projects on this site for absurdly low prices. Maybe some of the people wanting custom projects do not understand the amount of work required, but others seem to be trying to take advantage of model-builders in poorer countries. It is always amusing to scan the list of proposed projects and payment offers for those projects.
