Building reputation to continue downloading free models

Discussion started by aialexander

Hello. I've become annoyed with the pop ups asking me to advertise artists on my personal social media pages in order to continue downloading free assets. I don't want to. I'm only interested in the models.I understand wanting people to contribute, but I also don't appreciate the prospect of forcing people to participate in order to continue using the site. Sure I can always pay money to download stuff, but honestly if I had the money for that I wouldn't have come in the first place. The sole purpose I've used CGTrader is solely for its abundance of free quality assets. I've donated money to artists who have contributed free work on other sites. I have no problem with optional giving. Here I don't have an option, and I find that rather aggravating. What are your thoughts?

This shouldnt be a place to come just to download free models. Most of us spend a lot of time creating content to make users lives easier and more efficient when they are on a time crunch, and we would therefore like to get paid for our time to save you time. If your receiving models for free and have to do tasks to get it for free, then thats the price of "FREE"

I understand that. And I'm not saying that sharing shouldn't happen. It by all accounts should. I'm just frustrated that sharing content that is free is not optional. I use blendswap and turbosquid as well and by comparison, I don't have to jump through as many hoops to get the models I need. Sure, there's a limit to how many models you can download in a certain timeframe, but that's about it.

Making 3D models takes allot of time/work, way more then adding a link on social media pages, its not that much asked in comparison, right?

The amount of time it takes to share something isn't the problem, although I have run into some roadblocks with that too, mostly with Google +. What I'm saying is I shouldn't have to share a model in order to use it, free or otherwise. The price of free should be free. No strings attached. Such as it is with Turbosquid and other similar sites. I don't think sharing is bad, I just hate that it is a requirement.

Indeed, I think CGTrader and other 3D selling platforms should increase the number of task to do in order to get something for free. Even they should put a limit to the number of models you are able to share for free as a 3D creator (I vote for 1 or 0) After all, this shouldn't be a sharing platform, we have enough problems with piracy and undercutting.

Even artits have to do a lot of tasks in order to build a reputation, and no one complains, this is the game, these are the rules.

I am an artist. I am complaining. The rules are silly and so is the game.

I talk about games in general, each game has its own rules, or there is no game at all.
You are free to choose what kind of game you want to play.

In this case I have to disagree. Look up Pixabay if you haven't before.
