BIG IDEA for propel sale on CGTRADER

Discussion started by Newlc

Hi there,

Like many of you, my sales on this website is very very low, and i think it's because this website is not enough popular on the web

and for answer to this problem, I have an idea, check this out!

1st : We gonna made 1 long vidéo Showcase of 3 maybe 4 minutes of every good model that we sale on this website and that futur customers can find on CGTRADER

2nd : At the end of the video,  I shall see well a message which says "Find all this models on CGTRADER and during 2 weeks some models will be in very low price"

3nd : Every artists share the video on facebook, tweeter, forum, etc...

the goal it's to create a real video campagn for all of us

All the artists which want to participate send me photos or video of their models,  i can edit the final vidéo promo.

what do you think  about this idea guys????

Sounds like a great idea. Did you see the CG Trader channel on YouTube? They have an intro video, but I think it needs to be updated with a more sales-related message. Your idea would supply that. I like your idea of a model montage. There are lots to choose from. I think it's to everyone's advantage that top models are featured, so I won't ask for any of mine to be used. I'll be happy to share the link though.

The issue is that CGT seems to promote 3D print models only and while ignoring traditional 3D models.

Ricardas, lately we shifted our focus back on CG models. We realized that most CGTrader artists come from CG industry and 3DP industry hasn't reached mainstream consumers yet. Nevertheless we are working hard on adding additional channels that will drive more consumers to CGTrader.

Interesting Ricardas Marozas! That explains a lot! I wonder if that is because they realized that there is no future in regular 3D models anymore...

You right Ricardas, they not the only one marketplace for that too, ...i think we can add 3d print model in our video, hum ???

Better concentrate on the regular models. CGTrader will start selling 3D prints on Amazon soon, so no need for even more exposure in that area as it will not attract customers looking for traditional models and might even deter them as some might think that CGT is selling 3D prints only.

hi everyone! thanks for taking matters into your own hands :) we're super pleased to see this! We'll gladly share the video on our social media channels & blog, if you like. Is there anything else we could do on our end to help you spread the message?

@Alpha 3d...I don't know if promoting free items will attract the kind of customer the campaign is meant to target - paying customers, that is. I haven't been here long, but what I have noticed is that the one free item I uploaded is downloaded and viewed most and all models published are viewed. The free model - Roman Dome Garden Folly - is not low-poly (poly count: 719,776), nor was it a complex build, consisting of a few cylinders and half-spheres and basic texturing AND super-high-poly detailed capitals. The capitals make the model too poly-expensive for game dev. I uploaded this as a free model to be the 'canary in the coal mine', so I could test the traffic on the site. So, I'm watching a high-poly, simply built (low modeling skills required) item 'sell like hotcakes', not because it's useful or irresistibly attractive, but because it's FREE. With the views being 207 and the downloads being 28, the views-to-download ratio is almost 14%. That's about 10% above what a for-sale, real-world, marketed product would yield in most industries.

What this tells me is that the traffic on this site already has a high proportion of bargain basement hunters looking for free models, which proliferate on the Internet. The increasingly easy access to free models online is already undermining the for-sale model profitability.

Maybe it would be better to offer a 'deep discount', making the prices 'almost free', but still requiring the process of paying. Offering all models for $7 or recommending the Make an Offer option might be the way to go.

Maybe the latter, Make an Offer, option could be the focus of the campaign for all participating designers. It's a feature that certainly distinguishes CGT and it serves as a very useful over-ride for models that have been over-valued and over-priced by designers. We could use it as a tool for getting a better handle on pricing our models and it would reveal what opportunity for profiting really exists on this site, in the 3D modeling industry as a whole and specifically for each designer's product. The main point is to attract prospects who are willing and able to pay SOMETHING.

The price-point is the bane of marketing in every industry, but cost-to-serve analysis is decisive. If the only way to distribute our products is to offer them for free, there's no opportunity to get a return on investment. The sooner we know it, the better, I'd say.

Well you have 28 downloads, but I think I'm a better example for you point (which I agree with)... I have over 15,000 Free Model Downloads (READ THAT AGAIN, then look at my old work), and only 8 sold models on this site. The people on here, are, unfortunately cheap-skates... LOL! but it's bad for business... As for the coupon, I can offer 50% off on all models above $14 (because $7 is the minimum price CG Trader allows)...
tersta wrote
Yeah, you are a better example! Much, MUCH worse! LOL! I like your cheeseburger. Modeling just doesn't get better than that for realism. Don't give it away, friend! Know your worth. Compromise, but don't sell out. Sure, 50% limited time offer or one-on-one negotiations with prospects interested in specific models...that's fair. Really, if there's no money to be made, then so be it. Giving it away only adds to the problem, right?
joey-blendernut wrote
joey-blendernut
Correct :P Um, the cheeseburger is a piece of crap, along with everything else... If I didn't loose soooo many points, I'd delete them all ;P However, I just uploaded a couch, that I think is worth downloading... I uploaded it free, to make sure it works in other software... I only have Blender, and I don't know whether or not it will work in Maya, 3ds Max, Mudbox, or any of those... :| So, I've uploaded it here for free (39 more coming soon). I don't know what software you use, but if it's not Blender, would you mind trying the model out for me? :) And please let me know how it works for you! :D
tersta wrote
LOL! See what happens when we improve our skills? We look at our past work and see all the mistakes we made. The cheeseburger is GOOD, really. OK, went looking for your new couch and it doesn't show at the top of the list. Could you send me a link to it, please? I'll download it and check it out in MeshLab, Maya, Max, Silo, Vue, DAZ, Poser.

@Ricardas Marozas...Agreed, but the irony in promoting 3D print models is that the industry is already trending toward free sharing of models. Shapeways, Thingiverse and Autodesk 123D are good examples. And generally the DIYers are designing their own items using online apps like TinkerCad. Money might be made in production of 3D printed items, but it seems the model sales side is already off to a bad start. This is especially so, given that - unless buyers are happy with plastic output of small trinkets - the size limitations and high print material cost make it very unlikely that a regular customer base could ever be established. I'd profile the bulk of online 3D print customer as a DIYer experimenting with his/her own designs as a one-off craft/hobby/pastime adventure. A lesser proportion own a 3D printer and are designing their own models and likely specialize in jewelry design. I don't think it will be long before people tire of making plastic rings or paying $50 to make a single cappuccino cup. I do think there is opportunity for replacement parts manufacturing. For instance, the cost to make a plastic sprocket is on a par with the price to buy one, if you can find the right one. I'd say 3D printing is great for DIYers making obsolete mechanical parts and jewelry designers, but just a trendy adventure for everyone else.

By giving everything away all you will do is attract more freeloaders to this website and that will make CGtrader loose credibility. If only all the 3D websites would stop allowing free model downloads!

Although it is ok to give out free samples every now and then like they do at Yogurtland the system should be more restrictive. Basically it isn't ok for it to be free for all and unlimited amount of free downloads.

What the website should do is that if someone wants a free item they need to contact the specific seller first and then the seller needs to grant them a coupon to download their model. This way the seller can get to know the buyer more closely and build a relationship so that then the buyer will be more likely to buy from them in future if they get a good vibe. Online sales needs to get more personal.

Great idea Newick. We are in engineering business and we are a bit strange guys in this community. That's because we offer solid models for mechanical engineers for designing piping systems instead of polygon models.
But there are no mechanical engineers overhere.....
We are not going to leave CGtrader because we like it!

But we really some more attention from the engineers. So if you can use a model that's made by us, let us know and we make some high resolution renderings.
We are offering a 50% off pricing for that model for let's say 2 weeks.

It's is a nice way to experiment with the results social media, so we are in!

If you don't choose one of our models, no hard feelings.
Success with your project.

Wow guys. First of all thanks Newlc for a such great initiative! It's the best acknowledgement we can get - really appreciate that! Also it shows that CGTrader community starts to take off. As Juste said, we will do our best to promote the message.

As you are interested in increasing sales I would like to share some know-how on how you can really boost your personal sales and help us drive more customers to CGTrader. I will post it in separate thread as it got quite long.

Newlc, I uploaded tersta-cotswoldhouse.zip, contained tersta-cotswoldhouse.mp4 just moments ago. It's a 360 turntable, 24 f/s, 20 seconds long in 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. I don't like the video quality - just noticed how bad it looks in Windows player. So, I output to AVI. The AVI doesn't look much better. Last resort: I have all frames out to PNG. Maybe you can load those into your app.

Look for a second upload of tersta-cotswoldhouseAVI-PNG.zip.

I don't know if the first file was even uploaded, but I can see the Uploading status on the second one. Please confirm receipt. Thanks.

Newlc wrote

Yes, i receive the one Who the quality is very bad.... Could you send me the png sequence in zip file?
tersta wrote
Newlc, I just uploaded a new batch of PNGs (tersta-cotswoldhouse_PNGs.zip). I did AVI and MP4 tests on this batch and while there's less pixelation on defined edges, the whole image is really pixelated. Hopefully you can output a better video than I seem to be able to at this resolution. If not, then you have 480 PNG files to select a still image from. Let me know if you received this latest upload. Thanks again for your efforts.

Sorry, no mp4s here, and it'd take about a week to render a short turntable of my best model (8 hours per frame, time 3 [for 24 hours], times 7 equals 168 hours I believe... And I only get 21 frames out of that... not even a second long... Wow, it'd literally take like 2 months to render 8 seconds of animation). So, I uploaded a little character I made to sell for ten bucks on here... :D

Yes, for some reason, this "fast growing site" doesn´t sell much, unless we sell top models for $20 or less.

If you offer stuff for free you will only attract peasants who want free stuff.

About the video, i just saw this yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbM6WbUw7Bs

Bust of Donald Trump used in the video, as well as head for the robot at the end is my model: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/art/sculptures/donald-trump

I'm not sure was it sold here or on TS, but i would love CG trader to use this to promote it self.

The sad thing is that the guy who was making the video flaked out and didn't make it in the end... It was very mysterious too. Like for weeks it was going on and then silence. not sure why because his idea was awesome and so many artists sent him their models to put on the reel. Maybe someone else should try it and get all the material off him. It is a true pity that this project died... had really high hopes for it

I have been promoting CGtrader on my YouTube and other social media channels for many years at least 8! The algorithms are designed to stop cgtrader from being popular and promote Turbosquid over CGtrader. It is so sad to see this but there is not much one reviewer can do. We must all work together to change this! #marcoreviews
