Any free render engines out there?

for max or blender. I've heard yafray is a good alternative

I want to give Yafaray a shot and see how it works.. I use blender and max, pretty evenly...

Yafaray works similarly to Vray, gives nice results and it is pretty fast. But I think future is Gpu rendering, so cycles for free or Octane for afary price.

I agree about gpu rendering... I will see about buying octane as well. Have you used that?

What is your opinion: good render for jewelry?
