What does it mean to win 'free sales' on Cgtrader?

Discussion started by ricswika

Can someone explain or point me to the explanation as to what it means to win 'free sales' on CgTrader. For example, see the 3d builder challenge, https://www.cgtrader.com/blog/microsoft-3d-builder-challenge-winners-announcement, in the prizes. How would one go about using the prize?

Thanks

I think it's sales with 100% royalty rate.

Thanks, it sounds pretty obvious now. For some reason it just didn't click at first. Probably because my models are either free or dirt cheap, so it might add up to $1.20 at best for me. Not a huge incentive.

Don't put up any models for free it is a stupid idea. It gets you more views but you only attract free loaders to your models and that doesn't increase sales.

The last CGtrader statistics I saw claimed that offering at least one free model could indeed increase sales.

That what I'm trying to figure out. My models are all for 3D printing and I have to complete with sites like thingiverse with tons of free models. True, many there are broken or just lame, but there are also some very good ones, so it is tough to get anyone to pay for a 3d print model when they can get so many for free. My approach is to raise the bar by offering quality models, always test printed and with lots of extras, good pictures, renderings, videos, instructions and so forth. I'm still looking for that niche. I've tried everything from toys to gadgets to sexy. My best selling model so far is are sexy ones, so I suppose you can say sex sells. Big surprise.

I've removed most of my free models and am slowly making the transition. However, I have found giving away free models is a good way to draw traffic to your designs and gain followers. Even freeloaders can be converted in to paying customers once they get to know you.

In my experience 0 percent of people who downloaded my free models bought one of my models at a later date. It just doesn't make sense. You are doing the right thing by creating only 3D prints because regular models don't sell anymore for the same reason.
There are too many free regular models and people can get everything for free. If you want to give away free models only give them away to customers or people you know are interested in buying your models or want to show a free sample to their boss because they are buying on behalf of the company. All you need to do is state that you will offer free models upon request on all your model descriptions then the people who really care will come to you and ask.
