A stiletto dagger. Originating in the late 15th century in Italy. It is currently associated with criminals, but was originally used as a self defence weapon, and for delivering 'mercy kills'. Faster, more painless deaths than normal. Hence the nickname, 'mercy dagger'. Some modern versions can retract the blade to some extent.
