HISTORICAL NOTE: USS Advance, later known as the USS Frolic, was originally the blockade runner CSS A. D. Vance captured by the Union Navy in 1864 during the latter part of the American Civil War. It was purchased by the Union Navy, equipped as a gunboat and designed to block the waterways of the Confederate States of America. It also served as a dispatch ship and a supply ship when the war ended.
