HISTORICAL NOTE: CSS Stonewall in 1867 Kōtetsu, the ship was built in Bordeaux, France, for the Navy of the Confederate States under the name of Sphinx, but it was sold to Denmark after the ban on the sale of warships to the Confederate States in 1863. The Danes sold it to the Confederates who commissioned it as CSS Stonewall in 1865. The ship did not arrive before the end of the American Civil War and was delivered to the United States.

The Tokugawa shogunate of Japan purchased the ship from the United States in 1867 and renamed it Kōtetsu, but delivery was only possible in 1869 when the imperial government in Japan was established. The ship played a decisive role in the Naval Battle of Hakodate Bay in May, which marked the end of the Boshin War and the completion of the military phase of the Meiji Restoration. It was renamed Azuma in 1871, and sold for scrap in 1889. Was the first ironclad warship of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
