The assault on the United States Capitol was an event that occurred on January 6, 2021, when supporters of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, broke into the headquarters of Congress, violating security and occupying parts of the building for several hours. The event interrupted a joint session of Congress to count the Electoral College vote and certify Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.
