DESCRIPTION

The Triomphant class represents the absolute pinnacle of French naval deterrence — four nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines that form the sole backbone of France's entire strategic sea-based nuclear force, known as the force de dissuasion. Designated SNLE-NG (Sous-Marin Nucléaire Lanceur d'Engins de Nouvelle Génération — Next Generation Nuclear Missile-Launching Submarine) by the French Navy, each boat displaces 14,335 tonnes submerged, stretches 138 meters in length, and is powered by a K15 pressurized water nuclear reactor delivering 150 megawatts — giving her virtually unlimited range and an operational life measured in decades rather than miles. The four boats of the class are Le Triomphant (S616), laid down in 1989 and commissioned in 1997; Le Téméraire (S617), commissioned in 1999; Le Vigilant (S618), commissioned in 2004; and Le Terrible (S619), the most recently commissioned, entering service in 2010 as the first to carry the advanced M51 intercontinental ballistic missile. All four are now armed with the M51, which weighs over 50 tonnes, carries six to ten independently targetable thermonuclear warheads each with a yield of 100 kilotons, and has an operational range of up to 10,000 km — sufficient to strike virtually any target on earth from patrol areas in the North Atlantic. Each boat carries 16 M51 missiles alongside four 533mm torpedo tubes armed with F17 torpedoes and Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles, crewed by 110 officers and men in rotating two-crew blue/gold system ensuring at least one boat is on patrol at all times. All four submarines are home-ported at the Île Longue naval base on the Roadstead of Brest in Brittany — the heart of French nuclear deterrence. They are currently being succeeded by the next-generation L'Invincible class, with the lead boat under construction since 2024 and expected in service around 2036. This 960mm long 3D printable model captures the sleek, hydrodynamically refined form of these extraordinary submarines at 1:144 scale, faithfully reproducing every contour, the distinctive pump-jet propulsor, the missile silo arrangements, the sail geometry, and the characteristic silhouette of France's most powerful and secretive warships.

3D printing settingsThe model consists of 35 separate STL files that assemble into over 50 individual parts when fully built out, thanks to the modular use of repeated elements such as the 16 individual missile silo hatches and the M51 ballistic missiles themselves — which can be displayed open with missiles visible or closed for a clean running profile, exactly as the real submarines appear at sea. The complete accessory set includes the full sail with periscope and mast details, front and rear dive planes, articulated rudders in multiple positions for dynamic display poses, a detailed pump-jet propulsor with propeller guard, a mini-submarine rescue vessel with its own propeller, cruise missile accessories, and two-piece display stands designed to present the finished model in a clean, professional manner on any surface. Hull sections are named sequentially from bow to stern and split horizontally for printing, with the upper and lower halves of each section fitting comfortably on standard FDM printers. The model is optimized for FDM printing at 0.16–0.20mm layer height and 15–20% infill, with parts oriented for minimal support use and clean overhangs throughout. PLA+ or PETG both produce excellent results — PETG is recommended for any parts requiring higher rigidity or moisture resistance. The smooth, uncluttered hull surfaces of the Triomphant class reward careful printing and light sanding for a genuinely striking finished result, and the model scales cleanly to larger sizes for those who want a more imposing display piece. A rewarding, methodical build for any naval enthusiast — a tribute to the silent guardians that have kept France's nuclear deterrent unbroken at sea for nearly three decades.
