Bring a piece of deep-sea maritime history to your workbench with this highly detailed 1:12 scale display model of the Jason Junior (JJ) ROV, complete with its iconic tether winch deployment system! Designed as a prototype by WHOI for the historic 1986 Titanic expedition, Jason Junior was the brave little explorer that ventured deep inside the wreck's grand staircase. This 3D printable model is designed as a perfect companion piece for our previously released DSV Alvin submersible models, capturing a final footprint of approximately 62x48x40mm. If you own our original 1:30 scale Alvin model and want them to be perfectly compatible in the same showcase, simply downscale all the Jason Junior and winch STL files to 40% in your slicer. Please note that when scaled down to 40%, a resin (SLA) printer will likely be necessary, as the intricate details will become far too fine and microscopic for a standard FDM printer to handle cleanly. Although natively optimized for a compact scale, the engineering details across the 28 Jason Junior parts and 5 tether winch parts are so crisp that it can easily be upscaled for much larger, high-fidelity projects. To bring the display to life, both the thruster propellers and the winch reel drum are mechanically designed to rotate freely. Please note that this model was meticulously reverse-engineered using only a handful of blurry historical photos and expedition footage, as no official technical drawings or blueprints exist. Because of this, absolute accuracy cannot be guaranteed. What you see in the provided renders is exactly what you get; we highly encourage builders to carefully examine the renders before purchasing. As creators, we are absolutely thrilled with how this turns out, we loved making it, and we are confident fellow scale modeling enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy bringing it to life!
3D printing settingsThis kit has been intelligently engineered for a smooth, rewarding build experience that requires no complex printing setups. Thanks to its compact layout, the 28 parts for Jason Junior and 5 parts for the tether mechanism can be comfortably printed on almost any standard desktop printer. The assembly relies primarily on careful glue bonding, making it an accessible yet highly sturdy display piece once joined. To maximize printability and simplify the slicing process, the main hull has been smartly split directly down the middle. This allows both halves to be oriented perfectly flat on your build plate, resulting in an exceptionally clean surface finish with minimal to absolutely no supports required. Once printed, the flat mating surfaces align seamlessly for a quick, hassle-free glue-up. For printing at the native 1:12 scale on FDM machines, we recommend a fine layer height of 0.12mm or lower to cleanly capture the delicate profiles of the camera pod, light brackets, and outer frame skids.
