This is a historically accurate 3D model of the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), designed by General Motors and manufactured by Boeing. The Lunar Roving Vehicle was used exclusively during the later J-type Apollo missions, beginning with Apollo 15.
This particular model represents the Apollo 15 configuration. The LRVs used on Apollo 15, 16, and 17 were very similar, with most of the differences being related to the scientific equipment and tools carried in the aft chassis pallet.
Research & Historical Accuracy
Before beginning the modeling process, I gathered a large amount of reference material to ensure the model was as accurate as possible. The research included:
- 6×6 Hasselblad mission photographs
- Construction and engineering documentation
- LRV operation handbooks
- Astronaut training manuals
- Museum photographs
- Additional historical reference material
The model was built with the goal of matching the proportions, construction, equipment, and overall appearance of the real Apollo LRV as closely as possible.
Fully Rigged & Customizable
The rover is extensively rigged and highly customizable. Buttons, switches, controls, moving mechanisms, and other rigged components can be individually adjusted, giving you a great deal of freedom when creating your own animations and scenes.
The aft chassis pallet contains the major hand tools and equipment carried and used by the Apollo 15 astronauts during the mission.
The native Blender files provide the most features and flexibility. In particular, Apollo_LRV_Baked_For_Blender contains the most advanced functionality. I highly recommend watching the attached video to see many of the model's features in action.

Blender Files
The model is provided in several Blender versions, each intended for a different purpose.
Apollo_LRV_Baked_For_BlenderThe most feature-rich version of the model, intended specifically for use in Blender.This version contains the full Blender rigging and functionality, including the ground-interactive suspension system, customizable dust material setup, bone constraints, and the various adjustable controls and mechanisms throughout the rover.If you are using Blender, this is the version I recommend using. Please watch the attached video to see many of its features in action.
Apollo_LRV_BakedThe main Blender version with unbaked animations and rigging. Use this version if you want to create your own custom animations.
Apollo_LRV_Baked_Animation_BakeThe Blender version with animations baked. This is the version I used to export the model to FBX and OBJ.If you are not satisfied with the provided exports, you can also use this file to export the model yourself and customize the export settings to your needs.
Apollo_Dusty_LRV_BakedThe baked Blender version with the lunar dust material already baked into the PBR textures.
Apollo_Dusty_LRV_Baked_AnimationThe animation-baked version with the lunar dust material baked into the PBR textures.
Advanced_Apollo_15_Site_With_LRVThe complete lunar environment scene used to create my renders. It contains the lunar terrain, material systems, lighting, compositing, and other elements necessary to recreate the renders shown in the presentation images.
Apollo_LRV_UnbakedThe original version of the model using procedural materials rather than baked PBR textures. This version is provided for users who want to further customize or modify the material setup.
Baked_FBXThe cleanest ready-to-use export of the model.
It includes:
- Baked animations
- Correct object scaling
- Optimized geometry
- Baked PBR textures
Please note that when importing the FBX, some armatures may require simple parenting adjustments depending on the software and import settings being used.
UVs & Texture Optimization
The model contains some overlapping UVs. This is intentional and was done as an optimization measure.The LRV contains a significant amount of repeating geometry, particularly around the four wheels. Where possible, shared UV space was used for repeating components in order to reduce texture memory usage and make better use of the available texture resolution.
The model contains 11 individual baked PBR texture sets, with resolutions ranging from 2K to 5K. Only one texture set uses 5K resolution; the majority are lower resolution.
Non-Manifold GeometryThe model also contains a number of non-manifold objects. This is intentional and primarily applies to thin or visually simple pieces where closed geometry would provide little benefit while increasing the polygon count.
Depending on the software and rendering setup you use, backface culling may need to be disabled for some of these objects.
Optimization
This is my most optimized model to date.The complete model contains approximately 300,000 vertices, while retaining a high level of visual and historical detail. The geometry and texture setup makes it possible to use tge model with real-time applications in mind.
