When Captain Ebenezer Pierce offered Joshua Slocum a ship that wants some repairs in 1892, Slocum traveled to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, to find that the vessel was a rotting, derelict oyster sloop propped up in a field. What followed was one of the most remarkable acts of maritime restoration ever undertaken by a single individual. Slocum rebuilt and refitted the Spray over thirteen months between early 1893 and 1894, working in a seaside pasture at Fairhaven, replacing her rotted timbers, rebuilding her from the keel up, and making her ready for the open ocean. The total cost of materials came to just $553.62. On April 24, 1895, Slocum set sail from Boston Harbor alone, following a route that took him to Nova Scotia, the Azores, Gibraltar, South America, Samoa, Australia, and South Africa — navigating without a chronometer, relying instead on dead reckoning and noon-sun sightings for position, with nothing but a cheap tin clock to keep approximate time. He had sailed 46,000 miles in three years, two months, and two days when he ghosted into Newport, Rhode Island at 1 a.m. on June 27, 1898, becoming the first person in recorded history to circumnavigate the globe alone. One of the most remarkable qualities of the Spray was her ability to sail herself — due to the length of the sail plan relative to the hull and the long keel, the Spray was capable of self-steering, and Slocum balanced her stably on any course by adjusting the sails and lashing the helm fast — allowing him to sleep, cook, and read while she sailed on unattended across thousands of miles of open ocean.
