3D model descriptionThis fully RC-ready 3D printable model of the CSS Neuse measures 1,000mm in length at 1:48 scale, bringing one of the most fascinating Confederate ironclads in history to life at a scale that does full justice to her distinctive character and remarkable story. Enlarged from our earlier 628mm display version and comprehensively redesigned for radio control operation from the ground up, this is a complete reimagining of the model rather than a simple rescale — every aspect of the hull structure, interior layout, and assembly system has been revisited and optimized for the demands of RC building and on-water operation. The kit includes a comprehensive library of STL files covering the full hull, superstructure, and an extensive accessory set, with finished builds easily exceeding 150 parts depending on the builder's chosen level of detail. The fully furnished interior remains a centerpiece of the model — cannons, cannon shots, ammunition chests, barrels, crates, furniture, stairs, railings, and crew accessories are all included and reinforced for reliable FDM printing. The top superstructure is divided into sections, with the center section functioning as a removable access lid for displaying the interior or accessing RC electronics. The increased scale of this version means the interior volume is generous enough to accommodate a full RC electronics package comfortably, without the tight compromises that smaller-scale RC ironclad builds typically demand. A full-color 3MF file is also included for owners of color-capable printers.

3D printing settingsThis model has been designed specifically for RC operation and built with practical on-water use as its primary goal rather than an afterthought. Dedicated motor mounts, propeller shaft braces reinforced to accommodate standard propeller shafts and tubing, and a clean over-deck rudder lever system with linkage points concealed within the superstructure — styled authentically as chain-passage holes — are all fully integrated into the design. At 1:48 scale the beam of the model reaches approximately 213mm, providing generous interior width for side-by-side motor, ESC, battery, and receiver installation without compromise. All hull sections are sliced to fit print beds with a minimum 22×22 cm footprint and 25 cm print height, with both two-piece and four-piece hull options provided to accommodate different printer sizes. We recommend printing all structural hull components in PETG for improved water resistance and impact toughness, though PLA prints cleanly and is perfectly adequate for display builds. Recommended settings are 0.16–0.20mm layer height, 3–4 perimeter walls, and 20–25% infill for larger structural parts — the increased wall count is particularly important for hull sections that will be exposed to water. Smaller accessories and interior fittings can be printed at finer layer heights for sharper definition, or on a resin printer for the highest possible surface detail on the finest components. Deck access lids are designed to be secured with screws or 5mm x 2.5mm standard magnets, giving RC operators quick and tool-free access to electronics during on-water sessions. The modular design allows the model to be built as a fully sealed RC vessel, a partially open display piece showcasing the detailed interior, or anything in between — the choice is entirely the builder's.
