Full Hydroponic DIY Set

Full build price is about 10€/10$ - This includes Solar-Panels, Pumps, all Materials, Box - Eqipment list is included below

I have build this set multiple times to have a portable, no powerline, scalable back-up to my seedling culture. You can either take plants that have outgrown the grow-box and put them in here, or use it as a basic hydroponic farm, when put directly into sunlight. Either way a great way to cheaply cater for all your plants (herbs, vegetables, fruits), without having to spend a lot or care about water spillage, power-consumption or anything else.

This can be used without any pump at all, but I would advise against it, because after about 1-2 weeks this will eventually lead to problems with algea, if you forget to shake the water at least once a day. The easy solution is a micro-solar panel and micro-pump. Which can be bought for about 3€ a set.

EQUIPMENT: (Picture with all required parts in gallery)

  • Box: SmartStore Classic 14 (8l) - https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01EN2TA2E ~6-8€/piece
  • Rod: 4x 1m x 6/8mm - Wood, Plastic, Metal, it doesnt matter. ~1€/4 pieces
  • Pump: 3V Micro-Pump - https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07MYWHBFR ~2€/piece (Aliexpress even way cheaper)
  • SolarPanel: 3V 0,3W Solar-Panel https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B097GS2CL8 ~2€/piece (In most cases you need 2 panels, due to low lighting levels)

Depending on your local prices this can easily be build for <10€. Ending up with a fully operating, solar-powered, portable hydroponics system. All you have to do is adding some water every once in a while.

Alternatively to the solar-panel you can also just use any led-controller. I have multiple systems hooked up to my led-app and set-up a full daily watering plan over wlan. Also Arduino is a great, cheap and easy way to create an automated system. Both need a direct power supply though!

Printing Suggestions:

DO NOT PRINT IN PLA! All parts can get in contact with water. PLA will degrade in water/moist conditions within weeks or even days. Use PETG, ABS, Waterproof Resin, Polycarbonate, Polypropylene and so on. Check before, if unsure! Objects have been created to work without ANY support material. Check orientation before printing. Overall printing time sums up to somewhere around 3-8 hours. Depending on your printer. Check if your rods are 6 or 8mm. If you prefer imperial fractions go either 1/4in and scale up 6mm by about 4%, or take 5/16in and go with the 8mm without rescaling. If you did it wrong, take some glue ;)

Drilling Suggestions:

  • Rod-Holder: 10mm ~ 3/8 in
  • Hydroponic-Cup: 25mm ~ 1 in
  • Water-Inlet: 45mm ~ 1 3/4 in
