Elco Patrol Torpedo (PT) boats were fast, heavily armed wooden warships used by the U.S. Navy in WWII. Measuring 80 feet long, they acted as giant killers. Despite being built from mahogany and weighing 40 tons, they could hit speeds over 45 knots (52 mph). The most famous of these was PT-109, commanded by John F. Kennedy.Key Facts & DesignPrimary Builder: The Elco Naval Division of the Electric Boat Company in Bayonne, New Jersey, built 399 of these boats.The Plywood Derby: Elco won early naval design contests by testing a British-built boat and refining it into the famous 80-foot Elco class.Hull Material: The boats were made of thick mahogany wood and airplane cloth. This made them light, fast, and able to maneuver in shallow waters.Engines: They used three massive Packard V-12 marine engines.
