U-boats (short for Unterseeboot) were German military submarines that operated in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II to sink Allied merchant ships and cut off vital supply lines to Great Britain.Germany built over 1,000 U-boats during the war, with the Type VII being the most widely used class. Here are the primary facts about their design and operations:Surface Ships vs. True Submarines: U-boats were mostly surface ships that could dive, rather than modern submarines. They relied on diesel engines to travel on the surface and battery-powered electric motors when submerged. Because the batteries drained quickly, they had to spend most of their time on the surface.Tactics: U-boats often hunted in groups at night, known as wolf packs, to overwhelm Allied convoys.Life On Board: Service was brutal. Crews of around 50 men lived in hot, cramped, and foul-smelling conditions. Because space was so limited, sailors had to hot bunk (share the same bed in shifts) and sleep in the engine or torpedo rooms. The Toll: U-boats were devastating early in the war. However, Allied countermeasures such as radar, sonar, and air patrols quickly turned the tide. Serving on a U-boat was one of the most dangerous assignments in the war, resulting in a casualty rate of about 75%.Advanced Designs: Near the end of the war, Germany introduced the Type XXI. This was the first true underwater submarine, which could travel faster submerged than on the surface. However, the war ended before these advanced vessels saw significant combat.
