A hand water pump is a mechanical device powered by human force to extract water from underground aquifers or containers. It relies on a lever, a piston, and one-way check valves (foot and piston valves) to create a vacuum that draws water upwards and dispenses it through a spout. How It WorksThe standard hand pump is a positive-displacement pump whose operation can be broken down into a two-part stroke cycle:The Upstroke: When the handle is pushed down, the attached piston moves upward inside the cylinder. This creates a vacuum, closing the piston valve and pulling the foot valve open. This action draws water from the source up into the cylinder. The Downstroke: Pulling the handle up pushes the piston down into the water-filled cylinder. The foot valve closes to prevent water from returning to the well, and the piston valve opens, allowing the trapped water to move above the piston so it can be pushed out of the spout on the next cycle
