The submarine Abdül Hamid (also Abdülhamid) was an early steam powered submarine built in the United Kingdom in 1880 at the Barrow Shipyard. It was bought and put in service by the Ottoman Navy and named after Sultan Abdül Hamid II. It was the first submarine in the world to fire a live torpedo underwateThe Ottoman submarine Abdül Hamid was a pioneering steam-powered vessel of the Nordenfelt class, acquired by the Ottoman Navy in 1886 as one of the world's earliest military submarines, and is renowned for achieving the historic feat of firing a live torpedo while submerged during its trials.Ordered by Sultan Abdülhamid II amid naval rivalries in the Aegean Sea, particularly with Greece, the submarine was constructed in Britain by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness under a contract signed on 23 January 1886, with assembly completed in just ten weeks before being shipped in sections to Constantinople (modern Istanbul).[1][2] It measured approximately 30 meters (100 feet) in length with a beam of 3.7 meters (12 feet), displaced 160 tons when submerged, and was powered by a 250-horsepower steam engine using a coal-fired boiler and reserve steam tank for underwater propulsion.[1][2] Armament included two 14-inch (355 mm) Whitehead torpedo tubes forward, two 37 mm (1.5-inch) Nordenfelt machine guns, and provisions for additional torpedoes, enabling it to target surface vessels in a semi-submerged or fully submerged state.[2][3] The design emphasized horizontal torpedo attacks from periscope depth, with vertical propellers for depth control and a positively buoyant hull to facilitate surfacing, though it was designed for speeds of 10 knots on the surface and 3 knots submerged for limited durations of 8–9 hours
