Rights usage.. If i print a model I have purchased, am I allowed to sell moulds of it?

Discussion started by spankedmonkey82

Hi, if I make a mould of the model that allows other people to make soap of that model, using my mould to cast it, am I breaking the rules?

Thank you very much.

As far as I know the license here does not allow reselling a design or sub-license it.

If you make a mould (depicting a copyrighted design from someone ells) and sell it to someone/company, you basically need to give them permissions (a license) to make copy’s of the design or use it in any way. If you are not the original author of the design then your basically not authorized to grant any permissions for using the design in any way (you would be basically sub-licensing and the person you sold the mould to would be making unlawful copy’s of a copyrighted work).

To avoid this problem you actually would need to be the owner of the design or buy exclusivity to it and then you could transfer that to a company or license the design out on your terms (for example some fee for every 500 copy’s, etc., just any of “your” terms basically).

CGtrader license does not transfer ownership, it merely sets some user terms, so if you have use cases outside of the scope of these terms, then you best contact the original author to negotiate about additional terms or licensing deals.
