Rights to a Commissioned Model

Discussion started by drstevick

I hired an artist to create several models for me. Now that those models are complete...

Who retains the rights to the models? What (if any) limitations do I have with respect to the models? For example, can I sell the STL? Can I sell 3D prints of the models?

The final work is a multi-part piece that was designed jointly by an artist here and myself. I have posted a couple of pictures of the piece to social media and numerous people have expressed interest in either the STL files or a fully printed piece. I just want to make sure, from both a legal and moral aspect, that I am good. Or, what I may need to do in order to move forward.

Thanks!

It should be a part of the deal to decide who owns commercial rights, you or designer. If you both contributed to the model creation, then it's probably possible to co-own it, but you both have to agree to that. Without agreement, i think designer retains commercial rights by default.

Hi Austėja, I think this kind of information would be very useful for all users, so why not to provide it publicly? Even if only in the forum thread.
