importance of max model format

Discussion started by gswartz

Hello. I'm new to cgtrader and would like to get started selling models. However I noticed that a lot of what's out there is available in max format. I model in modo so can't export as max format. I wondered, from other sellers, how important is it to provide a model in max format? Thanks.

The more format you can upload the better. But .OBJ and .FBX is the most important I guess. When I look at my "Latest Download" spreadsheet, they are the most common formats people have downloaded.

That´s just because max is the most common working format, notice that I say working.
The most common selling format is OBJ. since most software can work with it.
If you are an occassional buyer the OBJ, format will serve for most purposes, but if you plan to work with the model, then the max. format is a great thing, since there are a lot of pros that buy models for a further work, the max. format becomes near a standard.
The OBJ. format can also be printed as long as you keep a closed mesh.
There are also other formats , if a client ask for it, there are tools to do the export.

Thank you. Although I'd like to increase the possible sales, buying a subscription for max is not reasonable... especially just to make that format available (I model mainly in modo). Is there another way to get a model into a max format? Are there people/services that will convert your model at a low cost? Thanks.

It shouldn't be hard to convert models to max format, but materials usually have to be reworked from scratch and that can be quite big task. But even if you'd find someone, who would convert your models to max, how you're planning to provide support for those models? Lets say customer bought your model solely because of max format and he discovered some issues with the model or file, how will you fix those issues? Selling models in formats for which you can't provide support, is a straight road to refunds and negative revies. Ask yourself if you want that?
