Commander of the 6th Army that surrendered in Stalingrad in 1943

Command: Paulus led the German Sixth Army during the brutal Battle of Stalingrad.

The Promotion: Was promoted to Field Marshal on January 30, 1943, expecting him to commit suicide since no German field marshal had ever surrendered.

The Capture: Paulus chose to live and surrendered on January 31, 1943, becoming the first German field marshal taken captive.

The Soviet Union released him in 1953, and he moved to East Germany to work in military history research until his death in 1957.
