The Japanese aircraft carrier Ryūhō was originally built as the submarine tender Taigei in 1933–1934 and converted into a light aircraft carrier in 1941–1942. Unlike many Japanese carriers, she survived the war before being scrapped in 1946. Her armament in 1942 consisted of eight 127 mm Type 89 dual-purpose guns in four twin mounts, thirty 25 mm anti-aircraft guns in triple mounts, and six depth charges; by 1945 she had received a much heavier anti-aircraft battery with additional 25 mm and 13 mm guns plus rocket launchers and a longer flight deck. She carried roughly 31–36 aircraft but spent much of the war transporting aircraft and training rather than serving as a frontline strike carrier. Ryūhō was damaged during the Doolittle Raid while still being converted, making her the only major Japanese warship damaged in that raid.
