Ready Made Dioramas - Old Viking Ruin in Gardar near 3D print model

Description

This is a model of a gateway made of huge blocks of hewn stone. The original (presumably the entrance to a large building that has vanished) stands on the archaeological complex of Garðar on Greenland, near the village of Igaliku. Garðar was the seat of the bishop in the Norse settlements in Greenland (...) and was the first Catholic diocese established in the Americas. (Wikipedia) The ruins of the cathedral and the surrounding farm buildings of Garðar are on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 2017. The model is not a fantasy scene, but an attempt in depicting the real artefact. Please compare to the photo of the original item from the Smithsonian Magazine in the image bar.

The model consists of three separate files: the base with one pillar or doorjamb constructed of layered stones, the second pillar , and the capstone. This is for easier printing in smaller printers, but most of all for easier painting and enhancing it to make it into a diorama. There are indentations in the base to show where the separate parts are to be placed and glued.

There is a textured footpath on the base that leads through the gateway, and of course all the stones are highly textured. Deviating from my other Ready Made Dioramas I haven't textured the rest of the ground. When you look at images of the site (just search for gardar in the Google Images search), you can see that the ground there is covered with long grass. There is no good way to texture and print this kind of ground vegetation, so may I suggest that this time you use some diorama material like grass tufts to finish the diorama? Of course you can enhance the overall scenery by adding moss to the stones and sand and pebbles to the ground.

The Garðar diorama detail can very well be incorporated into a model train landscape as a fascinating extra that can not be found among the usual model train sceneries. It can also serve as a part of a desktop game or be built into a bigger diorama of your own design.

The model was sculpted with Nomad Sculpt on my iPad. The files provided are stl-files. The base of the model has a diameter of roughly 120 mm, making it possible to be placed under one of the costumary glas dome sizes. Of course it is up to you to change the size according to your own wishes.
