Today I'd like to introduce my new Sea Urchin soft bait.
Previously, I only made sea urchins in the classic spherical design, but this time I decided to try something completely new—a mold consisting of eight separate parts.
I based it on my most popular size. The body diameter is 21 mm, while the total length from the tip of one leg to the tip of the opposite leg is 112 mm.
The biggest improvement is the new leg geometry. Instead of simple cylindrical legs, I designed them with elongated bulb-shaped sections. This allows each leg to flex at multiple points during the retrieve, creating stronger vibrations and a much more natural swimming action. The final bulb is slightly larger, making the bait even more lively in the water.
Printing the mold took several days because all eight sections could not fit on the printer bed at the same time.
Recommended print settings:
• Layer height: 0.08 mm• Walls: 10• Top layers: 10• Bottom layers: 10
For this version, I also made the alignment inserts as separate parts. This improves mold alignment and overall casting quality. The bottom half prints perfectly flat, while I recommend lightly sanding the top half with P1000–P2000 sandpaper after printing. This greatly reduces flash on the finished soft bait.
One important note: the very first cast usually produces more flash because the mold needs to warm up and fully settle into its working position. Starting from the second pour, the results improve significantly—perfect spikes, minimal flash, and a much cleaner finished bait.
I'm very happy with the final result. In my opinion, this is one of the most lifelike Sea Urchin baits I've designed so far.
