Its name is a compound noun composed of the elements lunde, meaning seagull (Norwegian lunde, seagull, or lundefugl, seagull), and hund, meaning dog. The breed was originally developed to hunt seagulls and their eggs in inaccessible nesting sites in caves and on cliffs.
