In 2003, David Weishampel and his colleagues described Zalmoxes based on the fossil that they found. However, the material that they assigned stayed in Zalmoxes shqiperorum until 2026, when Susanna Madiment and her colleagues found the skull in Hungary. Then, they decided that the holotype (NHMUK PV R 4900) of Z.shqiperorum can be identified as a new species. The generic name is named after Franz Nopsca, while the specific name is named after Albania.
