Description

First US Satellite to be place into orbit

Launched in January 1958 out of Cape Canaveral, Explorer I was the first spacecraft to detect the Van Allen Belts. A modified Jupiter Intermediate Range Missile was used to send Explorer I into orbit for 111 days.
