Copernicus was the Mars Transfer Vehicle proposed during the Constellation program. It consisted of a 10 meter diameter nuclear-thermal propulsion stage, a drop tanks, an inflatable main habitat module, a docking module, and a rigid cargo module. Crew would arrive at the spacecraft using an Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle capsule, which would remain docked to Copernicus for the duration of the mission. Other configurations were also proposed to visit asteroids, or as a reusable tug between low Earth orbit and lunar orbit, as well as alternate Mars configurations for different trajectories; these configurations mainly varied in the number and layout of propellant tanks carried
