Matricaria Chamomilla: German Chamomille Matricaria Chamomilla, commonly known as German Chamomille, is native to southern and Eastern Europe, but has been naturalized worldwide. The flowers bloom in early to midsummer, and have a strong, aromatic smell. The flowers contain a blue essential oil, what gives it the characteristic smell and interesting properties. This colour characteristic of the oil, attributable to the chamazulene it contains, explains why the plant is also known by the common name Blue Chamomile. Chamomile plants were used medicinally in Ancient Egypt and Classical Greece, as they contain more than 120 chemical constituents that can be used to treat intestinal problems. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and because it is an anti-spasmodic, can be used to treat menstrual cramps.
