The 1P87, commonly referred to by its factory designation PK-120, is a Russian optical weapon sight produced by the optics plant Zavod Jupiter and branded under Valday, originally developed as part of Russia’s Ratnik infantry gear program. It’s designed as a 1× non-magnifying sight intended to allow target acquisition at close to medium distances and to modernize traditional iron-sighted rifles like AK series variants. Technically it functions as a collimator/prismatic sight with a reticle meant to be similar in practical use to Western holographic sights, although Russian designations sometimes blur the distinction between prismatic and true holographic optics. The optic offers brightness settings for use with night vision devices. The sight’s adjustments allow windage and elevation changes, and it can be mounted on standard Picatinny or Russian-style side rails with appropriate adapters. Because it was part of testing programs and early field deployments, true service use has been somewhat limited, indicating adoption by units (such as VDV) that are equipped with newer rifles like the AK-12. The 1P87/PK-120 represents a uniquely Russian approach to modern optics, but generally more traditional and less technologically advanced option compared with Western counterparts.
