A catapult is a broad term for medieval siege engines that hurled projectiles using stored mechanical energy. The most formidable of these was the trebuchet, which used gravity and a massive counterweight to launch payloads weighing hundreds of pounds into or over castle walls. The term covers a variety of historical weapons categorized by how they generated power:1. The Trebuchet (Counterweight-Powered)The undisputed king of medieval siege weapons, the trebuchet appeared in the 12th century and dominated battlefields until the advent of gunpowder. How it works: A giant, uneven wooden beam pivots on a central axle. A massive box filled with stones, sand, or lead is attached to the short end, while a sling holding the payload is attached to the long end.Power Source: Gravitational potential energy. Winches were used to pull the heavy counterweight up, locking the beam in place. Upon release, the falling counterweight swung the long arm upward, generating immense rotational force and throwing stones further than any earlier catapult.Performance: They could hurl massive stones ranging from (200\text{ kg}) to over (300\text{ kg}) (and sometimes much heavier) over distances exceeding (350\text{ meters})
