Rare Objects
This model is part of a personal project called Rare Objects. I select rare and exceptional objects from the past, they can be ancient artifacts, antiques, vintage technology or fashion accessories & garments. They all go through the same process :
- curation
- modelization
- animation
- rendering
- presentation
The aim of this project is to shed new light on forgotten gems and share their story, while making their 3D model available for everyone.
The coiled corset by Alexander McQueen
The coiled corset from The Overlook collection (1999) by Alexander McQueen combines meticulous craftsmanship, radical body adornment and was a unique collaboration between McQueen, Kees van der Graaf and jeweller Shaun Leane.
It was made of 97 handcrafted aluminium coils. The construction is similar to that of the cuirass, the sides are screwed together, with the wearer inside. Kees van der Graaf created a plaster mould of model Laura Morgan’s torso, onto which Leane then fitted the coils.
This was a physically demanding piece to make; Leane was only able to craft eight coils in a 16-hour day, curving, shaping, hammering and polishing the aluminium to achieve the final result. Laura Morgan modelled the piece, which took 15 minutes to put on, and almost as long to take off. The corset limits motion due to its high neck and extension to the upper hipline.
